St. Thomas shows up on so many cruise itineraries, and for years I thought I had it figured out. It's a shopping port, right? Part of the U.S. Virgin Islands, tax-free deals on jewelry, the kind of place where you browse the stores, grab a souvenir, and head back to the ship. That's what I believed until I actually gave this island a proper chance.
What pulled me back again and again wasn't the duty-free bargains. It was the realization that St. Thomas has so much more going on beneath the surface, literally. The snorkeling here has become one of my favorite cruise port experiences, and I've discovered corners of this island that most passengers never see.
We found a company called St. Thomas Adventures that completely changed how I experience this destination. They do snorkeling, Jeep tours, and boat excursions, but our favorite is the Jeep tour where they pick you up right at the ship. It's a small private tour with no more than four people and your guide for the day. That intimacy makes all the difference. The guide takes you around the island, stopping at a couple different snorkel spots and beaches, with a scenic drive woven throughout. It's the best of both worlds: you get to see the landscape from the mountaintops (which is genuinely stunning) and then slip into the water to experience what's below.
One stop takes you snorkeling for sea turtles, along with whatever other sea life decides to show up that day. It's always been a good adventure. Our guide has taken us to small beaches that only locals know about, places that were absolutely beautiful, tucked away from the cruise crowds. We've seen old sugar cane ruins and all kinds of really neat things you'd never stumble across on your own. Although the snorkeling isn't necessarily the best I've seen in the Caribbean, these trips have been some of the most memorable.
The variety here surprised me. We've done ziplines, kayaking at the eco-park, and Island tours. But one experience I keep recommending is the walking food tour. We got to try a lot of really good bites and experience local cuisine and culinary delights that you simply can't find wandering around on your own. Between the ocean, the mountaintop views, and the food scene, there's a combination here that suits almost any traveler.
Here's something I learned the hard way: pay attention to how many other ships are in port on the same day as yours, and the size of those ships. The downtown area can get quite busy and crowded when multiple large vessels arrive together. If you see a lot of ships scheduled, plan something away from downtown during peak hours. Book that snorkel tour, head to Magens Bay (which is a pretty famous beach for good reason), or catch the tram up to the top of the mountain and enjoy a banana daiquiri while the crowds thin out below.
The beauty of St. Thomas is that it truly offers something for everybody. Whether you want to walk through town, go shopping, get out into nature, spend time at the beach, go snorkeling, or just take it in from a scenic overlook, there's an experience waiting for you. There's even a Pirate Museum if you're looking for something indoors. This isn't a destination where you have to fit a certain mold. Families, couples, solo travelers, nature lovers, foodies: everyone can find their right fit here.
I'm actually headed back to St. Thomas on my New Year's cruise later this year, and I haven't quite decided what we're going to do yet. We're going to wait and see what tickles our fancy. That's the laid back attitude this island inspires. After multiple visits, I still find new things to discover, new guides to learn from, new flavors to taste. That's the kind of destination I love sharing with my clients, one that keeps rewarding you the more you explore it.
