I'd heard the word "different" used to describe Virgin Voyages more times than I could count. Different from traditional cruising, different vibe, different approach. But what does different actually mean? That's exactly what I needed to experience for myself when I boarded Resilient Lady for a five-day Caribbean sailing out of Miami.

Virgin Voyages is Richard Branson's adults-only cruise line, with four ships they affectionately call "the ladyships," a nod to their British heritage. Resilient Lady is a mid-sized ship carrying about 2,700 passengers. Not too big, not too small. The kind of size where you can explore and still discover new corners by the end of your trip.

What Different Actually Looks Like

From the moment I started preparing to board, I realized this wasn't going to be a typical cruise experience. Virgin is huge on their app. Everything you need for your cruise lives there: check-in, dining reservations, shore excursion details, even disembarkation information. There are no announcements on board, so you really need to pay attention to the app. It sounds like it could be overwhelming, but honestly, I appreciated that nothing interrupted me during the day.

The embarkation process itself was laid back in a way I hadn't experienced before. You can drop bags as early as 9 a.m. and do an early check-in, but you won't board until your assigned time starting around 2 p.m. We used that gap to grab lunch in Miami before walking straight onto the ship and directly to our room, which was ready and waiting.

My Sea Terrace cabin surprised me with its storage. It didn't look like there would be much, but there was more than I expected. The beds were an interesting L-shape configuration when split, something I was initially concerned about sharing with another advisor I didn't know well. But with the way the pillows lined up, we weren't looking at each other at any point. It worked better than I anticipated. And that hammock on the balcony? Super comfortable. Just make sure that door is locked when you come back inside, or the AC won't kick back in.

The Food, The Vibe, The Freedom

Here's where things really felt different: there's no main dining room or buffet. Instead, there are themed eateries throughout the ship, including The Galley, which is like a food court with quick-service, made-to-order options. And all the food is included. Want steak at the steakhouse? No upcharge. Italian? Included. Mexican? Included. The dinners were surprisingly quick too, which was a pleasant surprise.

Virgin's big thing is to "vacation as you." There's no dress code. If you want steak in shorts, go for it. You don't have to eat at the same time, at the same table, with the same people. I saw a group of friends doing cosplay throughout the cruise. One night they were in Lord of the Rings costumes. Good on them. That's how they wanted to enjoy their trip, and that's the whole point.

The themed nights had incredible participation. Scarlet Night ends with a huge pool party, and pretty much everyone was sporting something red. There was also a pajama party on the first night. Some people wore pajamas to dinner, others just for the party itself. It was a fun way to kick things off.

Who This Experience Is Right For

This is not for cruise traditionalists. If you need formal nights and structured dining times, this isn't the right fit. And obviously, it's 18-plus only, so families with children need to look elsewhere. People who aren't comfortable with apps and technology might struggle too, since so much runs through the app and the in-room iPad.

But for adults looking for something different with more of an all-inclusive feel? For couples, friend groups, bachelorette parties, parents leaving the kids at home for a quick escape? This could be exactly what you're looking for. The age range on board was broader than I expected, anywhere from 18 to people in their 80s, and everyone I talked to said they were having a great time.

I now have a much better idea of what "different" actually means. It's one of those experiences that's hard to describe but makes sense once you've lived it.
